130 million girls drop out without access to school

The time it takes to read this story, about eight girls under the age of 15 will be born - in most of the world’s poorest countries - and many will never be able to go back to school.

Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is campaigning for girls' right to education - and wants to try to emphasize it on an urgent basis.

There are 130 million girls who are completely absent from school.

This is “the most marginal and the most difficult to reach,” says Mrs. Gillard.

He chairs the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), which raises funds in the developed world to support education in almost po0 poorer countries.

The UK government is among the biggest supporters with nearly 1 billion in the last 15 years.

A special focus of the GPE was to increase the number of girls in school - because in low-income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, girls can be very much missed.

A UN report earlier this year warned that one-third of the world's poorest girls, aged 10 to 18, never went to school.

“Many deeply impoverished families have some tough choices about whether they have the resources to send their daughters to school,” Mrs Gillard said.
